Practicalities

Where and when?

Work parties are organised on alternate Sunday (with the occasional Saturday) at National Trust owned sites and properties across Sussex.

Recent sites that the group has worked at are:

  • Sheffield Park
  • Selsfield Common
  • Black Cap
  • Lavington Common
  • Cissbury Ring
  • Standen
  • Alfriston Clergy House

Throughout the year weekend tasks are organised, sometimes staying in basecamps (simple, yet warm dormitory style accommodation) and other times we camp. Catering is organised for both and a small charge is made for both options – this information is available in our programme.

What does it cost?

One day tasks are free to attend – why not come along before joining up?

We charge for weekend tasks and working holidays that are organised by South Downs NTV. The costs can vary but always include catering and accommodation. When advertised in the newsletter, all details will be included

  • Weekend task £15 – £20
  • Working holiday (seven days) £40-£80

When booking a week, or weekend task, please remember to complete the weekend booking form and send your payment to the Treasurer.  We are able to accept payment by credit or debit card or by PayPal.  Please use the link below.  Please adjust the amount shown on the PayPal website to agree with the amount you are paying.

What to bring with you

We recommend the following:

  • Old clothing, including waterproofs (if you have them) – remember to layer up if it is cold.
  • A packed lunch (unless told otherwise by the contact). In addition, the group usually provides hot/cold drinks and other refreshments throughout the day, but please remember to bring your own mug (not china!)
  • Sturdy footwear (steel toecaps an advantage), or Wellington boots.
  • Gloves (gardening, or other similarly tough).
  • A sense of humour to cope with the weather!

Due to the nature of the work we undertake, it is advisable to have an up-to-date tetanus jab.

The work party leader will also have a first aid kit for minor injuries.

Contact us

If you’re planning to come along to a work party, it is important that you contact the named leader, so we know you’re coming.  For one day work parties (taking place on a Saturday or Sunday), please email the contact by 6pm Thursday.

For weekend tasks, contact should be made at least ten days before and you will need to complete the weekend booking form and send payment to the Treasurer.

We are able to accept payment by credit or debit card or by PayPal.  Please use the link below.  Please adjust the amount shown on the PayPal website to agree with the amount you are paying.

Work parties generally start at 10am and finish between 4pm or 5pm depending on the time of year and the weather!

Remember: If you have registered to attend a work party and then for any reason cannot attend, please try and contact the work party leader, so they avoid waiting for you before setting off to the worksite.

Transport.  If you are not able to get to the worksite by car or bus you should travel to the nearest railway station and another volunteer should be able to collect you from there. Please arrange this with the leader as early as possible in the week before the task day.
