Where and when?

Work parties are generally organised on alternate Sunday (with the occasional Saturday) at National Trust sites and properties across Sussex.

Recent sites that the group has worked at are:

  • Sheffield Park Garden
  • Selsfield Common
  • Black Cap & Ashcombe Bottom (near Plumpton)
  • Cissbury Ring
  • Standen
  • Waterhall (old golf course near Brighton which is being rewilded)

What does it cost?

One day tasks are free to attend – why not come along before joining up?

We may charge a small membership or joining fee to cover expenses.  These fees are reviewed annually so please contact us for details of the current fee.

What to wear & bring with you

We recommend the following:

  • Old clothing, including waterproofs (if you have them) – remember to layer up if it is cold.
  • A packed lunch (unless told otherwise by the contact) and a hot drink, if you desire. In addition, the group usually provides drinking water and biscuits throughout the day.
  • Sturdy footwear (steel toecaps recommended) or Wellington boots, depending on the task.
  • Gloves (gardening, or other similarly tough).
  • A sense of humour to cope with the weather!
  • Details of your emergency contact and any important medical information in a sealed envelope.

Due to the nature of the work we undertake, it is advisable to have an up-to-date tetanus jab.

A first aid kit for minor injuries will normally be available at the worksite.

Contact us

If you’re planning to come along to a work party, it is important that you contact the named leader, so we know you’re coming.  For one day work parties (taking place on a Saturday or Sunday), please email the contact by 6pm Thursday.

Work parties generally start at 10 am and finish between 3 and 4.30 pm depending on the time of year and the weather!

Remember: If you have registered to attend a work party and then for any reason cannot attend, please try and contact the work party leader, so they are not left waiting for you before setting off to the worksite.

Transport.  If you are not able to get to the worksite by car or bus we may be able to arrange a lift to the worksite, for example from a nearby train station. Please contact the workparty leader as early as possible in the week before the task day if you will need a lift.
